A critical look at yoga’s history in a way never taught before!
In this module, we delve into some of yoga's more hidden histories—insights and perspectives that have nearly been talked about or studies in most training programs.Led by Brooklyn-based teacher Bess Prescott, together, we’ll explore the evolution of yoga, critically examining its roots through both mainstream and lesser-known texts, as well as the lens of modern scholarship.Along the way confront the systems of privilege and exclusion—like Brahminical dominance and caste structures—that have shaped yoga as we know it today. By doing so, we aim to uncover how these histories continue to influence the practice and teaching of yoga in the modern world. This module is not just about studying history; it’s about unlearning harmful narratives, challenging assumptions, and asking deeper questions about authenticity, accessibility, and equity in yoga. It’s about empowering yourself to teach in a way that is informed, inclusive, and reflective of yoga’s true complexity. You’ll come away with:
- A broader understanding of yoga’s historical and philosophical contexts.
- Practical tools to incorporate these teachings into your classes.
- The confidence to engage with students in conversations about yoga’s roots, its evolution, and its role in the world today.
This is an opportunity to deepen your relationship with yoga, to teach with greater authenticity, and to bring more depth and integrity to your practice and offerings. Are you ready to look deeper?
